This 5 Day Tour takes you to the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve and Lake Naivasha National Park. The Masai Mara is one of the best known and most popular reserves in the whole of Africa. At times and in certain places it can get a little overrun with tourist vehicles. Seasoned safari travelers, travel writers, documentary makers and researchers often admit that the Maasai Mara is one of their favorite places. The open Savannah, the annual wildebeest migration, the density of game, the variety of birdlife and the chance of a hot air balloon ride make Masai Mara a number one destination in Africa.

You will frequently see impalas, topis, giraffes, elephants, zebras, buffalos, warthogs and other grazing herbivores. MASAI MARA MIGRATION GUIDE & BEST TIME TO SEE IT

The Great Wildebeest Migration in the plains of East Africa is one of the world’s most thrilling, intriguing and spectacular displays of wildlife behavior. As such, our travelers place great timing importance on having the best front row seats to see the event.

Masai Mara is the most noted location of the wildebeest migration due to its famed Mara River crossings. The migration is an ongoing movement of animals that takes place throughout the year. The migration is not a singular, isolated event. Instead, the phrase describes the constant movement of over 1.5 million wildebeests and hundreds of thousands of zebras, as well as elands and gazelles. As with other wildlife, the purpose of the movement is the search for pasture and water. When supplies of these vital resources are depleted in one area, the animals move to another area where water, grasses and other food sources are plentiful.

Owing to the massive size of the herds, we work closely with strategic camps and lodges in Masai Mara to give its guests a high-quality African plains tour experience, especially those who desire a personal viewing of the varied facets of the migration.

One of the most requested events in the migration is the arrival crossing of the Mara River that occurs around late July to August with parts of September and again on their return south, around the last two weeks of October through early November. These are the best times to track and see the annual wildebeest migration in Masai Mara.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MASAI MARA FOR A SOUTH-WESTERN KENYA SAFARI

Masai Mara National Reserve is an extraordinary wilderness travel destination in south-western Kenya that offers an ideal climate and exceptional year-round game viewing. The average daytime temperatures remain quite comfortable while the nights are much cooler. The average daytime temperature is around 77 F (25 C) from June to August while the nighttime lows are around 50 F (10 C). The average daytime temperatures range from 79 F (26 C) to 82 F (28 C) in September through May, and the temperatures drop at night to lows of 55 F (13 C).

Masai Mara Reserve experiences two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. The presence or absence of rainfall affects vegetation and water sources thus affecting the movement and concentration of animals. When these resources are scarce, wildlife traverse from the deep interiors to more open areas in search of food and also converge to permanent or last-remaining water sources. The long cool-dry season from July to October is considered by most to be the best time of year to visit Masai Mara but also the most expensive season too. The absence of rain means that the flora is less dense, so animals are easier to observe.

The long dry season also corresponds to the Great Migration that arrives in Masai Mara from the Serengeti National Park (read more on the Tanzania side of the migration). Approximately 1.5 million wildebeests and hundreds of thousands of zebras, elands and gazelles cross the crocodile infested Mara River in the reserve in search of food and water. Although their arrival varies from year-to-year, in general, the herds arrive in late July through August and also parts of September.

    WHY VISIT THE MASAAI MARA?

The Maasai Mara is Kenya’s most famous national reserve that runs along the country south-west border, just across the border from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. This gigantic ecosystem is shared by the two countries and protected with a combination of national reserves and community-run conservation areas. The Mara is best known for the annual Great Migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra.

he Maasai Mara offers a wide choice of accommodation, ranging from tented camps to luxurious lodges. Some are located within the borders of the national park, while others are on conservancies that surround the park. Those located on private conservancies offer the added lure of activities not allowed within the park itself, including night drives, nature walks, off-road driving and the opportunity to enjoy dining out in the bush.

The reserves are not fenced, meaning that game moves freely between the reserves and the conservancies, creating one vast wildlife area. During winter (June to September) and the migration months, the Maasai Mara becomes very busy and wildlife sightings become very crowded, with vehicles gathering for a lion kill or potential river crossing. During the quieter summer months and the green season (when there are heavy rains, particularly between March and June), the reserve is much quieter and visitors feel as though they have the Maasai Mara to themselves.
